Old Testament Lesson 1: “This Is My Work and My Glory”

Testing the words of LDS leaders with Biblical Truth:

Old Testament Gospel Doctrine Teacher’s Manual

* This year’s focus of study is the Old Testament. LDS scripture adds to and clarifies God’s Words found in it (page 1):

“In addition to the Old Testament, this course includes the books of Moses and Abraham from the Pearl of Great Price. These books provide important additions and clarifications to some of the material in the book of Genesis. The book of Moses is an extract from the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible. The book of Abraham is a translation that the Prophet Joseph Smith made from some Egyptian papyri.”

Test these LDS Words with Biblical Truth:

While Jesus walked the earth, he certainly didn’t mistrust the Old Testament (which was the scripture used by Jews). He never stated that we needed a book to “provide important additions and clarifications to some of the material in the book of Genesis.” If he had, his Apostles would have stressed this to their followers, and it would have been written down; just like Joseph Smith did to his followers. In fact, Jesus continually pointed his followers to read and study the Old Testament because it “testified of him”. Jesus and his Apostles embraced the Old Testament and used it completely.

* Immortality is a free gift to all men but eternal life depends upon our obedience (pages 3 & 4):

“• God’s work and glory is “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39). What is immortality? Who will receive immortality? What is eternal life? Who will receive eternal life? Elder James E. Faust said: “There is a distinction between immortality, or eternal existence, and eternal life, which is to have a place in the presence of God. Through the grace of Jesus Christ, immortality comes to all… , just or unjust, righteous or wicked. However, eternal life is ‘the greatest of all the gifts of God’ (D&C 14:7). We obtain this great gift, according to the Lord, ‘if you keep my commandments and endure to the end.’ If we so endure, the promise is, ‘you shall have eternal life’ (D&C 14:7).”

Test these LDS Words with Biblical Truth:

Maybe according to the “Lord” of Mormonism, eternal life depends upon “if you keep my commandments”. But, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world testifies that gaining eternal life depends upon faith:

John 5:24 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”

And in John 6:47 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

I love His Words here, in John 3:14-18
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

In John 17:1-3 “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

And in John 10:26-29 “But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

John the Baptist revealed in John 3:36: “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

John the Beloved testified in 1 John 5:11-13 “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

The Apostle Paul testified in Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
