Preparing for Exaltation Lesson 2: Agency: The Power to Choose

Testing the words of LDS leaders with Biblical Truth:

Preparing for Exaltation Teacher’s Manual

* Next to life, agency is God’s greatest gift to man (page 8):

President Spencer W. Kimball, twelfth President of the Church, described agency as the “basic gospel law” …So important is this law that Heavenly Father has always protected it. Before we came to this earth he cast Satan out because Satan sought to destroy our agency. Heavenly Father allows us to use our agency in this life even though he knows many of us will use it unwisely. President David O. McKay, ninth President of the Church, said, “Next to the bestowal of life itself, the right to direct that life is God’s greatest gift to man.”

Test these LDS Words with Biblical Truth:

Amazingly, God has given us the freedom to direct our lives as we choose. Unfortunately, every single person chooses to do evil!

* In pre-earth life we all made the wise choice to follow Heavenly Father. 1/3 of Heavenly Fathers children made the wrong choice. Along with Satan, they will be punished for eternity in Outer Darkness (page 11):

• What important choice did we make in the pre-earth life? (We chose to follow Heavenly Father and Jesus instead of Satan.) How do we know we made this choice? (We have physical bodies; those who followed Satan will never have the opportunity to have bodies. They did not keep their first estate.) …The adversary rebelled and adopted a plan of his own. Those who followed him were denied the right to a mortal body. Our presence here confirms that we sanctioned our Father’s plan.”

Test these LDS Words with Biblical Truth:

Jesus taught that there are only two eternal destinations in which a person can be sent to on Judgment Day: either a person is judged as righteous and they will live eternally in Heaven with God; or, a person is judged as evil and they will live eternally in Hell with Satan. Many LDS members emphatically say this teaching is false. They claim that our loving Heavenly Father would never send so many people to live eternally in such a place of horrible torment.

Now, I come back to the false LDS belief which claims that 1/3 of Heavenly Father’s Spirit children were cast out of heaven. According to LDS teaching, these spirit children merely made one wrong choice during the supposed Premortal War in Heaven! They used their agency unwisely and followed Satan’s plan instead of Jesus’. According to LDS teaching, these spirit children were cast out of heaven and sent down to earth as demons. They will never have an opportunity to receive a body, nor can they ever repent for that one wrong choice they made. After Judgment Day, they will be cast into Outer Darkness to spend eternity in torment–in the very same domain as Satan.

I bring up this false LDS teaching to ask: If you believe that God would send 1/3 of His Spirit children to Outer Darkness simply for making one wrong choice, why is it so hard to believe that God will send to Outer Darkness all who are judged as sinful?

* What are the eternal consequences for making bad choices? (pages11-12):

* What are the eternal consequences for making bad choices? (Pages 11-12):
We Are Responsible for Our Choices… Explain that the final principle necessary for agency is our responsibility for the results of our own choices. We sometimes hear a person say, “Someone (or something) made me do it.” Will God ever accept that as justification for our choices? Why or why not?
…Our Choices Are of Eternal Significance… What choices have you made this week that lead you toward liberty and eternal life? How does breaking the commandments of God lead to captivity and death? What are some seemingly small choices we face each week that, if made improperly, could gradually lead to captivity and spiritual death? (Answers may include whether or not to pray daily, attend church meetings each week, obey your parents, be completely honest in your schoolwork.)

Test these LDS Words with Biblical Truth:

LDS doctrine claims that the worst that could happen to you for making bad choices in this life would be living in the lowest kingdom of Heaven. This kingdom is considered a kingdom of glory. This is a false teaching!

The true consequence of sinning is spiritual death–spending eternity in Hell with Satan and his demons! To read more about the true consequence of sin, go to this blog Post: “The Death Penalty for Even One Sin?” written March 23, 2009; or, Click here:
